Music in the Park: Flag Day Concert to be staged Friday

In the mood to kick back and enjoy patriotic songs, mixed in with some Dixieland, Blues, and Country Western?

If so, then plan to attend the Music in the Park Flag Day Concert at 7 p.m. Friday in the Lehighton Amphitheater.

In the event of rain, the concert would be held in the Pfc. Clyde R. Houser Jr. Building/Borough Annex at 110 N. Third St.

Henry Long, leader of the Perseverance Jazz Band, said the band will perform Patriotic songs.

“We’re trying to do something for everybody,” Long said. “People like all kind of music.”

The band is being sponsored by Andreas Plumbing & Heating. Tickets are compliments of Ovsak Funeral Home.

As part of the event, donations are being accepted to fund the new park benches for the upper park.

In December, borough council approved a capital campaign project by the borough’s Parks & Recreation Board.

The park currently holds 40 benches, and the cost for a new bench would be about $1,000 each, or a total of $40,000.

Autumn Abelovsky, who serves as secretary of the board, said the borough has received a matching donation of $20,000, meaning they only need to raise $20,000.

To date, Abelovsky said they have reached about the $8,000 mark. The board is accepting donations from $10 to $1,000 or more to the park bench capital campaign.

Abelovsky said that if a donation will cover the cost of the entire project, plaques would be considered.

The park is used for concerts, movies, and other community events.

The borough previously received funding from the Commonwealth Financing Authority for improvements to the park.

Funding in the amount of $150,000 was received from the Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program for improvements to the Upper Park Amphitheater, as well as $200,000 from the Multimodal Transportation Funds for streetscape and pedestrian improvements to the streets around the upper park.

However, the park benches were not part of the grant funding, Abelovsky noted.

The cost is $10 for reserved seating. Contact 610-730-0041, or Events@LehightonBorough.com.
