A fuel spill that began early Monday morning in the Palmerton area spanned through several municipalities.

The spill, which began around 6:45 a.m., is believed to have started along Forest Inn Road, where it then continued onto Delaware Avenue, according to Palmerton Borough Police Chief Randy Smith.

“Our crew was notified,” Smith said.

From there, the spill continued onto Route 248, went through Route 873 into Slatington, and carried on into N. Whitehall Township, according to Slatington Fire Department Chief Jason Nicholas.

“The spill spanned over a wide range of miles,” Nicholas said. “We covered the Slatington/Washington Township (portion), and then PennDOT came in with sand and were going to sand the whole stretch of 873.”

Nicholas said Walnutport Fire Police also assisted, while Slatington Borough assisted with the cleanup and PennDOT handled the spill control and cleanup.

He said a two-car crash occurred in the 500 block of Main Street in Slatington that is believed to be the result of the spill on the highway.

No injuries were reported in the crash, Nicholas said.

Slatington Borough Police Chief Dave Rachman said as of Monday afternoon that he couldn’t confirm if there was a crash.

Further, Rachman said his department is unsure what type of vehicle the fuel spill originated from.

“We have no idea what type of vehicle it was,” Rachman said.

Rachman said that it’s suspected to be diesel fuel, and suspected to be from a tanker truck.

He added the amount of rainfall certainly didn’t help the matter.
