Weatherly hosts June hillclimb this week

Twice a year race car drivers from around Pennsylvania and beyond come to Weatherly for the hillclimb.

The June hillclimb will take place this weekend, June 7-9, along Buck Mountain Road in the borough.

In a hillclimb drivers don’t race against each other on the same track, they take timed runs against the clock.

The Weatherly course is located on Buck Mountain Road. It is one mile long, has six turns, and rises 340 feet in elevation. The current record holder, North Carolina’s George Bowland, completed the course in 47.592 seconds back in 2012.

On Saturday and Sunday, drivers will take single-car runs up Buck Mountain Road.

The event takes place from 9 a.m. through 4 p.m. on both days.

Admission and parking are free. Spectators can expect a steep walk through the woods along Buck Mountain Road to reach parts of the course.

Friday night, weather permitting, drivers will parade their cars through the borough starting at 7 p.m. A plaque is presented based on the borough manager’s choice for favorite car.

The Weatherly Hillclimb was first held in 1961. Today it is organized by the Weatherly Hillclimb Association.

Several local organizations like the Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Little League, Weatherly Community Library, and Weatherly High School students have stands where they sell food during the event.

This year the Carbon Chamber recognized Weatherly Hillclimb Association with its Tourism and Entertainment Business of the year award.

Last year the hillclimb association received a First Federal Charitable Foundation grant. They are planning to use the money to build a pavilion for the vendors to sell food during the event. Construction is expected to begin on the pavilion immediately following the conclusion of the June hillclimb.

The fall hillclimb takes place in mid-September.

The pits are open to the public and are located at 70 Laurel St., Weatherly.
