A look back: May 31, 1972

Today’s rainfall caused a heavy rockfall on the Mansion House Hill on Route 209 which resulted in hazardous driving conditions for cars traveling between Jim Thorpe and Lehighton.

A large chunk of rock about 2 feet wide and 3 feet long just missed cars traveling the road at 9 a.m. when the rock came plunging down the mountainside.

The rockfall occurred in the area where a crane, with a large concrete block attached to a cable, had been used to hammer rock loose from the mountainside.

There is much controversy mounting concerning the project, as observers believe hammering away at the side of the mountain will only disturb huge rocks at the top of the mountain causing them to plummet to the roadway.
