A look back: May 23, 1957

“We hope our united family will be a happy one for many years to come,” said Claude Mench, president of the Jim Thorpe Council, in addressing a special meeting of the council in the Diligent Hose Company headquarters, Heights, to mark the formal admission of residents of Hackelbernie, Chestnut Hill and adjacent areas to the borough under the recently approved annexation project.

The annexation encompasses all residents of Hackelbernie, Chestnut Hill and the Lents Trail from the western borough line on West Broadway to the Five-Mile Tree immediately beyond that point where the former Switchback Railroad tracks cross the highway near Gehring’s Farm.
