2019 primary election: Jim Thorpe and Penn Forest will have races in general election

Four people will run for three four-year terms on the Jim Thorpe Borough Council in the fall. There will also be a supervisors’ race in Penn Forest Township.

Jim Thorpe

Four Democrats sought three nominations for the council seats. The winners were Michael J. Yeastedt with 406 votes; Kyle J. Sheckler, 366; and Jay T. Miller, 351. Losing out was Robert C. Schaninger, who collected 248 votes.

A fourth candidate in the fall will be Republican John T. McGuire. He was the lone candidate on that side Tuesday and received 266 token votes.

Penn Forest Township

There are two seats on the Penn Forest Township Board of Supervisors to be filled this year.

Two Democrats and two Republicans who were unopposed in the primary balloting will square off against each other in the fall for the six-year terms.

The Democrats are Sherry Knappenberger, who received 283 votes, and Roger L. Meckes, who tallied 272. The GOP members are Scott Lignore and Chris Bartulovich, who collected 372 and 338 votes, respectively.

The township voters are also scheduled to elect two auditors, for six-year and two-year terms. There were 17 write-in votes for the six-year term nomination and 11 write-in votes for the two-year term, although the county’s election board will have to determine if anyone won those nominations.

Kidder Township

There was one contested race in Kidder Township on Tuesday, when Republican Thomas “Bing” LaFond defeated Stephen D. Lileck for their party’s nomination for a four-year term on the board of supervisors. LaFond had 47 votes while Lileck netted 22.

LaFond was unopposed for the nomination for a six-year term on the board and received 106 complimentary votes in that balloting.

The township voters are also slated to elect someone to serve a six-year term on the board of auditors.
