Schuylkill controller’s office revamped

Schuylkill County Controller Christy Joy is ready for the last piece of the puzzle.

With the transfer of First Deputy Controller Ron Zimmerman to county grant writer, Joy is retooling the organization of his office. The last piece — hiring an auditor — is in process.

Christy said he received 72 resumes in response to the job posting and narrowed the field to eight people who received first interviews. Of those eight, five were invited to second interviews. Joy said he hopes to wrap up those interviews within the next week or two.

“Ron (Zimmerman) was a faithful employee and as asset to the county, and he’ll continue to be those things in his new role,” Joy said. “It was a good time to rebalance the office and update job descriptions.”

Joy credited Human Resources Director Deborah Twigg with “paperwork done just right” during the process. Twigg presented some of the changes during her personnel action report to the commissioners, during their workshop meeting Wednesday:

Position eliminated: county auditor.

Position eliminated: auditor/accountant

Position created: Pension administrator, Sharyn Yackenchick, Wayne Township.

Position created: Accountant/auditor fixed asset, to be hired.

Mario Basile, Wayne Township, who has been with the controller’s office since Jan. 2, 2012, was promoted to first deputy.

“Mario — he’s known as the Mayor of the Courthouse — will be stepping up to first deputy,” Joy said. “He has an extensive resume in government accounting, having worked for the Attorney General and the treasurer for the state of Pennsylvania.”

“He checks all the contracts that the commissioners sign,” Joy added. “He analyzes purchase orders, requests for checks, approves payments.”
