Commissioners approve repository sale for $1; property will be rehabbed for a homeless veteran

A nonprofit company has gotten a deal on a property in Port Carbon, which means in time, a homeless veteran will have a home.

We Agape You Inc., based in Berks County, opened a veteran and housing office in Schuylkill Haven in February. The nonprofit organization helps veterans find jobs and housing.

During a workshop meeting Wednesday, the Schuylkill County Commissioners approved the repository sale of 211 N. Second St., Port Carbon, for $1, to We Agape You. Angela Toomey, Tax Claim Bureau, made the request.

In other land-related matters, the commissioners added three properties to the county land bank: 40 N. Lehigh Ave., Frackville, and 124 Main St., Girardville, both located in North Schuylkill School District; and 228 North St. and 318 N. Third St., Minersville, Minersville Area School District.

After the meeting, Glenn Roth, County Solicitors’ Office, explained that in order to add properties to the land bank, the commissioners must approve the “compromise,” or removal, of delinquent taxes owed to the school districts.

“The land bank is an entity that acquires properties,” Roth explained.

“Once the land bank has ownership, the property can either be demolished or rehabilitated.”
