Marykwas earns honor at LCCC

Jim Thorpe graduate Justin Marykwas recently was named Co-Athlete of the Week at Lehigh Carbon Community College.

The freshman pitched a complete game, throwing nine innings and allowing just one earned run while striking out 10 in a 4-1 victory over Union County.

Marykwas shut out the Owls through eight innings. Union County scratched out one run in the ninth, but Marykwas was able to close out the game.

The Cougars also recognized Logan Foley, a sophomore from Emmaus, who pitched a complete game, surrendering one earned run and recording 10 strikeouts in a win over Raritan Valley.

LCCC returned to action on Monday and swept both games against the Luzerne County Community College. The Cougars won the first game, 4-0 and took Game 2 by a final of 11-1.

Marykwas was on the hill for the first game and improved his record to 5-1, allowing three hits and striking out 11 over seven shutout innings. He lowered his ERA this season to 2.93.

In Game 2, Lehighton product Collin Haupt stepped up to the plate in the sixth inning having singled, doubled and tripled in his previous three at-bats. He completed the cycle, crushing his fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot to give the Cougars an 11-1 lead.

The sweep helped the Cougars improve to 15-11 overall on the season and extended their current winning streak to six games.
