Local Roundup: Results from April 22

Marian posted wins in baseball and softball action on Monday.

Elsewhere, Palmerton opened its new softball field with a victory, while Northwestern’s Emily Akelaitis collected her 100th career hit.

BASEBALL

Panther Vy.-Shenandoah

Panther Valley used a six-run fifth inning to pull away from Shenandoah Valley for an 11-3 win.

Josh Robin led the Panthers with four hits, two of them doubles, two runs and an RBI, while winning pitcher Brad Buzzard added two hits, one a homer, two runs and two RBIs. Mason Goida contributed two doubles, two runs and an RBI.

The Panthers (7-5) also received a double and three RBIs from Aaron Miller, and a hit, two runs and two RBIs from Chuck Byers.

Buzzard struck out six during his 4 2/3 innings pitched.

Marian-Northwest

Quest Wilson hit a three-run home run and Brandon Cann pitched five solid innings to lead Marian to a 6-1 non-league victory over Northwest Area.

Wilson extended the Colts’ lead with his blast in the seventh inning, while Cann allowed five hits and struck out five in earning the win.

Cann added a triple and run scored, while Alex Kubishin (double, run), Aaron Mason (single, two runs) and Dante Agosti (single, RBI) also contributed offensively.

The win lifted Marian to 7-3.

Wilson-Palmerton

Wilson handed Palmerton a 7-4 Colonial League defeat.

Ryan King led the Blue Bombers (7-6) with a single and two RBIs, while Zach Silfies added a single and an RBI.

Teammate Ben Serfass finished with two runs scored and four walks.

The Warriors’ Noah Raso delivered the big blow in the game, hitting a two-run homer in the third inning.

Palisades-Northern Lehigh

A six-run third inning helped Palisades hold off Northern Lehigh for a 9-6 Colonial League victory.

Brandon Hess had three singles and a run scored for the Bulldogs (3-9), while Chase Misera finished with two doubles and four RBIs.

Aaron Rudolph added a hit and two runs scored.

For the Pirates, Kyle Oechsle had two hits and three RBIs.

Kutztown-Tamaqua

Kutztown cruised to a 19-2 non-league victory over Tamaqua.

The Cougars jumped ahead with a eight-run third inning and put the game away with a nine-run seventh.

Nate Boyle (single, double) and Cody Hamm (two singles) each had multiple hits for the Blue Raiders (3-10), while Brayden Knoblauch and Nick Breiner scored the team’s two runs.

For Kutztown, Gage Sicher knocked in six runs while Alex Graff had four hits.

Wilson-Palmerton

Palmerton opened its new field with a victory, defeating Colonial League opponent Wilson by a 5-0 score.

Lexi Merkel tossed a four-hit shutout and struck out 16 to lead the Blue Bombers (11-2; 9-2).

Kailah Altemose had three hits and an RBI, while Megan Serfass chipped in with two hits and two RBIs.

Notre Dame-Northwestern

Emily Akelaitis used her bat as well as her arm to help spark Northwestern to a 4-3 Colonial League win over Notre Dame.

The Tigers’ pitcher finished with 10 strikeouts, allowing just two earned runs. At the plate, she had three hits — including the 100th of her career, and two RBIs.

Molly Mitman (single, double, two runs scored) and Morgan Farthing (single, double) also contributed offensively for Northwestern (12-2).

Marian-Northwest

Marian needed only five innings to post a 13-3 non-league victory over Northwest.

Winning pitcher Lyndsey Reinoehl helped her own cause with two singles and a two-run home run.

Reinoehl allowed five hits and struck out six.

Athena Matenkoski had a big day at the plate for the Fillies, finishing with a single, home run, three runs and three RBIs. Emily Shaud added two hits, one a double, two runs and an RBI.

The win upped Marian’s record to 6-4.

A three-run second inning helped Palisades gain a 4-2 Colonial League victory over Northern Lehigh.

Lauren Hoffman led the Bulldogs (4-8) with a triple and a run scored, while Julia Wanamaker added a double.

Nolehi also received a single and run scored from Hailie Krasenics, and an RBI single from Ali Handwerk.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Liberty-Northwestern

Liberty rolled to an 18-5 victory over Northwestern.

Emilee Schultz, Sarah Schultz, Ali Lister, Lexi Bleam and Baylie Alley all scored goals for the Tigers (0-8).

Northwestern’s Bailey Scheffler and Charlotte Horn had assists.

Pleasant Vy.-Saucon Vy.

Alexandra Bush had six goals and two assists for Pleasant Valley, but it wasn’t enough as the Bears dropped a 20-11 decision to Saucon Valley.

Juliana Lopez finished with three goals and an assist for PV (9-3), while Brielle McInay also scored twice.

The Bears also received a goal and assist from Hayle Stintman.

TRACK

Tamaqua correction

In Monday’s Scholastic Roundup, Tamaqua’s Khalid Holland was inadvertently left out of the results of the Shippensburg Roddick Invitational results.

Holland placed sixth in the pole vault, clearing a height of 14-0.
