Tamaqua man gets probation in sex assault case

A Tamaqua man facing 10 charges, including multiple sexual assault charges, entered a guilty plea March 6 to three charges.

Corey Barnes, 19, of Tamaqua, will be on probation on the three charges for a total of 10 years.

The incident occurred March 24, 2018. Tamaqua Police Department officer Henry Woods investigated after getting a report from Tamaqua Area High School Principal Thomas McCabe. Barnes had told McCabe on April 11 that he had sex with the victim, a 10-year-old girl. McCabe contacted Tamaqua police. Woods, then the department’s criminal investigator, spoke with Barnes and his mother; Barnes confirmed his story.

Woods charged Barnes with rape of a child, three counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child, aggravated sexual assault of a child, statutory sexual assault, sexual assault, indecent assault, indecent exposure and corruption of minors. Barnes, who has been diagnosed with autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and Asperger’s syndrome, was released on $100,000 unsecured bail.

On March 6, Schuylkill County Judge Cyrus Palmer Dolbin accepted Barnes’ guilty pleas for indecent assault of a person less than 13 years of age, indecent exposure and corruption of minors. Dolbin attached two years of probation on the indecent assault charge, three years of probation for indecent exposure, and five years of probation for corruption of minors. The probation sentences are to run consecutively.

Barnes must pay a $50 monthly supervision fee while he’s on probation. He must also pay $50 to the CJEA, and provide a DNA sample, paying a $250 fee. He must attend sexual offenders’ counseling.
