2019 primary election: Harvilla is seeking re-election as sheriff of Carbon County

Anthony C. Harvilla of Tresckow, Banks Township, will seek re-election as sheriff of Carbon County. The Democrat is a lifelong resident of Carbon County. Harvilla earned a bachelor’s degree in law enforcement and corrections from the Pennsylvania State University and a master’s degree in public administration from Marywood College.

Harvilla began his law enforcement career in 1977 as the first work-release coordinator at the Carbon County prison. He was later appointed Carbon County chief adult probation officer. In 1989, Harvilla went to the U.S. Courts as a federal probation officer. In 2010, he was promoted to Chief U.S. Probation Officer in the Middle District of Pennsylvania. Harvilla oversaw a staff of 57 employees in four divisional offices. His agency provided services to 17 federal judges, and his annual budget was nearly $5 million.

Since taking office in 2016, Harvilla has managed a sheriff’s office of 30 employees and a $1.2 million budget. He instituted numerous safety enhancements at the courthouse and related county buildings. He has upgraded sheriff’s uniforms and law enforcement equipment and has implemented a series of office functions designed to increase efficiency and productivity.

Harvilla serves as president of the Carbon County Prison Board and holds several positions on the Carbon County Criminal Justice Advisory Board. He is a member of the Carbon County Intermediate Punishment and Safety Committees. In August 2018, Tony was appointed by Gov. Tom Wolf as a commissioner on the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency.

Harvilla is a member of the National Sheriffs’ Association and the Pennsylvania Sheriffs’ Association. He holds memberships in the Tresckow Game and Gun Club, Paradise Hunting and Fishing Club, Beaver Dam Outdoors Club, Kelayres Outdoor Club and the Tresckow Hosey.

Harvilla said, “I have spent my entire career in public service and want to continue to share my knowledge, extensive training and administrative experience with the citizens of Carbon County. I am seeking re-election to continue to enhance the sheriff’s office and the Carbon County Criminal Justice system.”

Harvilla is married to his wife of 38 years, Cheryl, and has two daughters, Lauren and Lindsey.
