Volunteers needed

The Garden of Giving is in need of a multitude of volunteers, including a person with QuickBooks experience to sit as a board treasurer. That very important job requires a two-year commitment. The Garden is also looking for an individual with a great personality to do phone calls and outreach to volunteers on a weekly basis. Computer basics is a great help, too.

Maple sugaring

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center is sponsoring a public Maple Sugaring Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 2.

There is also a time for schools, Scouts, home-schoolers and other interested groups to learn about maple sugaring, which has been going on in the area for hundreds of years in a two-hour program Feb. 25 through March 8.

A special day in the Sugarbush for Scouts is March 9. Programs can be scheduled between 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and are open to any level of Scouts and their families.

Bobby Rydell date

The Western Pocono Community Library has announced that Bobby Rydell will be at the Brodheadsville library from 5 to 7 p.m. March 7, a rescheduled appearance from the postponed Nov. 15 event.

All prior ticket sales will be honored, but limited tickets are still available.

Arts in Eldred

The Eldred Township Community Center, at 516 Kunkletown Road in Kunkletown, will be holding its third annual Art Exhibition from 6-9 p.m. April 12 and from 9 a.m. to noon April 13.

The works of local artists will be on exhibit, and some pieces will be available for sale.

Earth Day coming

The 2019 Monroe County Earth Day Celebration is sponsored by the Monroe County Conservation District and the Monroe Campus of Northampton Community College in Tannersville.

It is being held April 27 at the Monroe campus of Northampton Community College in Tannersville. There is no fee for exhibiting, and all nonprofits promoting the great things that are environmentally oriented are allowed to sell merchandise as long as funds generated are used to support the organization.

Last year’s event was a huge success, with more than 1,000 people attending, and it is anticipated that this year’s event will be even bigger.

Conservation Camp

Monroe County Conservation District and the Monroe County Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs are sponsoring Conservation Camp July 20 through July 27. It is a weeklong residential program held at Stony Acres, a 119-acre Wildlife Sanctuary/Recreational Facility owned by the students of East Stroudsburg University in Marshalls Creek and is open to students 14 years old to this year’s high school graduates and provides young people with hands-on classroom and field instruction, covering many aspects of natural resource conservation and management.

Various programs are scheduled for camp week including presenters from the Pennsylvania Game Commission, Tobyhanna Conservation Association, Blue Ridge/Cherry Valley Rod and Gun Club, National Park Service, Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry, and Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation Center.

Reduced registration

Pennsylvania residents may be eligible to receive their car registration for $10 rather than $36. To qualify, eligible applicants, regardless of age, must be retired and receiving Social Security, SSI payments, retirement benefits or other pensions and annuities. Income from other sources such as interest dividends, capital gains, business income, rental income, wages, public assistance, unemployment compensation, cash gifts, life insurance and death benefits must be considered in calculating total income.

To be eligible for the retired status processing fee, the vehicle must be titled and registered in the name of the person who meets the above qualifications. If the vehicle is registered jointly to two people, at least one of the registrants must meet the requirements above. The qualified person applying for the reduced fee must be the principal driver of the vehicle unless physically or mentally incapable of driving. Only one vehicle per person may be registered for the $10 processing fee. The application for the reduced registration fee must be sent when the renewed registration is made.

Those who receive only unemployment compensation, public assistance, or who are a student or other individual who is not retired do not qualify. The total income from all sources named above must not exceed $19,200.
