A family of five from New York were seriously injured Friday afternoon when they were involved in a crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike Northeast Extension.

According to dispatchers, the crash occurred around 5 p.m. on Southbound I-476 between the Route 903 EZ-Pass exit and Mahoning Valley.

The family was driving south near mile marker 83 when a tire and wheel thought to be from a forklift flew through their windshield. The female suffered severe head trauma. Her husband and three infant children were also injured.

The woman and one child were flown by helicopter to a Lehigh Valley trauma center, while her husband and two other children were transported by paramedics to St. Luke’s Hospital Gnaden Huetten Campus.

Members of the Franklin Township Fire Company helped extricate the family from the vehicle and established landing zones on the south bound lanes.

State police at the Pocono Station are investigating the incident. No further information was available.
