Zioin Opera workshop to present 49th Annual Music Production

Zion Opera Workshop will present the Broadway musical “Curtains” at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 28-March 2, as well as a matinee at 2 p.m. March 2.

This musical is new for Zion, and will mark the first time it has ever been presented in Carbon County.

The show debuted on Broadway in 2007. It takes place in 1959. Boston’s Colonial Theatre is host to the opening night performance of a new musical.

When the leading lady mysteriously dies on stage, the entire cast and crew become suspects and are quarantined overnight while detective Frank Cioffi, played by ZOW veteran actor Zachary Sessock, conducts his investigation.

Lt. Cioffi is a devoted fan of musical theater and uses this passion to help the cast revise their flop of a musical in hopes of turning it into a Broadway-bound smash, all while piecing together who might be the killer among them.

The first to be murdered is the show’s “star” performer, Jessica Cranshaw, who can’t seem to sing on key or follow one of the choreographer’s direction, let alone remember her lines. Cranshaw is played by longtime ZOW member Karen Serfass, who appeared in shows with Zion Opera Workshop in the 1980s and ’90s, took a break to raise a family.

Actress Niki Harris is played by ZOW’s stage director and longtime member, Jessica Schafer. Harris becomes the love interest of Cioffi, who has admired her acting for some time.

The songwriting duo of “Robbin Hood” (the show within the show) is Georgia Hendrix and Aaron Fox. Hendrix, who is thrown back on stage due to the death of Jessica, is played by ZOW veteran Laura Cressley, who also assists with dance instruction for ZOW. Fox is played by Doug Rau, who has appeared in many ZOW shows over the years.

Carmen and Sydney Bernstein are the producers of “Robbin Hood.” The brassy and larger-than-life couple are played by Tina Becker and David Zimmerman, who have both had many featured roles with ZOW over the years.

The director of the play is portrayed by Brandon Cressley, who has had several lead and supporting roles with ZOW.

He is assisted by the show’s general manager, Oscar Shapiro, who is played by Noah Smith, who has also been featured in several ZOW shows.

Tara Crowe, who has appeared in many roles with ZOW, portrays stage manager Jenny Harmon. Daryl Grady, entertainment reporter, is played by Adam Reichard, who has also appeared in many productions.

Stage actors in the show within a show are Bambi Bernet, played by Becky Herd. Herd has had many lead roles with ZOW, and starred as Dolly Levi in last year’s production of “Hello Dolly!” Bobby Pepper is played by ZOW newcomer, John DeMatte.

Other ZOW veterans in the show are Dylan Coffin as Randy Dexter, Casi Short as Roberta Wooster, Amy Shelly as Mona Page, Eliza Asmann as Marjorie Cook, Hannah Smith as Arlene Barruca, Aidan Malloy as Roy Stetson, Ethan Malkowicz as Brick Hawvermale, Bethany Evans as Jane Setler, Kylee Kresge as Peg Prentice, Calvin Maholick as Ronnie Driscoll and Logan Kester as Russ Cochran.

Newcomers in named roles include Nicholas Hrusovsky as Harv Fremont and Justice Cressley as Connie Subbotin.

Rounding out the ensemble are veterans Martha Cox, Felicia-Sue Anthony, Heather Brown, Hannah Schweitzer, Emily Shelly and Kristen Campbell. Newcomers in the ensemble are Sue Anthony, Brielle Gosselin, Sophia Foreaker, Olivia Erickson and Kaitlyn Serfass.

Choreography is by Deb Strausberger, owner of Lehighton’s TNT Dance Studio. Technical directors are the husband and wife team of Pati and Duane Reichard.

Pati is joined by Nancy Keiser, Casi Short and Tina Becker in creating and finding costumes for the show.

Lisa Schweitzer is the rehearsal pianist, and will be joined by ZOW’s orchestra for the performances.

Zion Opera workshop is under the direction and supervision of Bradly R. Cressley.

Tickets can be obtained from any cast member, from Carbon County Music and More or by calling box office manager Sue Yeastedt at 484-629-3116.
