Community strength training programs for adults

Penn State Extension will be offering the StrongWomen/Growing Stronger Program, a 10-week exercise program for middle-aged and older adults to be held at the St. Peters Community Center in Lehighton.

The series will be led by Diane Szwajkowski, retired massage therapist and personal trainer with more than 25 years of experience, and Keri Byrne, a nutrition educator with Penn State Extension.

The StrongWomen/Growing Stronger program is a safe, effective strength-training and nutrition program for individuals who have been active or sedentary for the past few years and are interested in improving their health.

The classes, which meet twice a week, consist of a nutrition lesson and 8-12 strength training exercises that help improve strength, balance and flexibility. Make a commitment to becoming healthier and feeling better about yourself. You can remain vital throughout your lifetime through healthy eating and exercise. Individuals who have participated in the program have become stronger, more active and energized.

Adults (men and women) 40 and older are invited to join at St. Peters Community Center in Lehighton (Weissport), 177 Main Road. Classes begin on Feb. 26 and will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 2 p.m. for 10 weeks. The last class will be held May 2.

For those considering signing up, it is recommended that you attend a free information session at 1 p.m. Feb. 14. There will be a short presentation, forms to fill out and a chance to ask questions.

For those who wish to join but cannot make the information session, it is required that you show up 30-60 minutes before class on the first day to fill out the necessary paperwork. You may register online at:https://extension.psu.edu/strongwomen-growing-stronger.

Space is limited. Online registration is expected to open by Feb. 15.
