Carbon workers getting a raise

All of Carbon County’s employees will see an increase in this year’s salaries, some more than others.

During the annual salary board meeting Monday afternoon, the county salary board approved increases of 10 percent or more to seven positions, and 3 percent raises for all employees.

Of the seven positions that saw a higher than normal hike, the board explained that it was due to either oversights, not classifying the position as supervisory before or an increase in responsibilities.

The biggest increase was for the Carbon County animal warden position. That position, Commissioners’ Chairman Wayne Nothstein said, is a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week position and was not reflecting that. Tom Connors is currently filling that position.

“We looked at the salary, his overtime and everything else and came up with a new annual salary in place of overtime,” Nothstein said.

The position now increases from $14.65 per hour to $35,630 a year, retroactive to Jan. 1.

Other positions that had an increase include the district justice office supervisors. Each of the four positions will see a 10 percent increase, retroactive to Jan. 1.

“We never had a supervisory type position in those offices, but they were supervising,” Nothstein said.

In the fiscal/data processing department, the fiscal/data processing technician will also see a 10 percent increase because, Robert Crampsie, county controller, said he dropped the ball when that position was combined with another position two years ago.

“I didn’t include the additional duties,” he said, adding that the action was now to correct that oversight.

In the sheriff’s department, the chief real estate clerk also saw a 10 percent increase.

Sheriff Anthony Harvilla said this increase was because the duties of that position are exceeding those of what similar positions were being paid and because of the amount of funds the person was handling for the department.

In addition, the salary board established a few new positions in the county.

They include:

• District justice: One part-time district justice secretary I at $11.95 per hour.

• Adult probation: One part-time administrative assistant at $13.84 per hour.

• District attorney: One clerical specialist at $10.84 per hour.

• Sheriff’s office: One administrative assistant at $13.84 per hour; and one deputy sheriff at the prevailing Carbon County Sheriff’s Association Union rate.

• Children and Youth: One county caseworker I at $14.53 per hour.

• Corrections: One site coordinator trainee at $15.52 per hour.
