A look back: Dec. 29, 1959

Jim Thorpe Borough Council met in special session last night in the Diligent Hose Company headquarters and announced plans to collect one-half of 1 percent in wage taxes, effective in July.

By announcing its intent to adopt such an ordinance, the solons served notice on the Jim Thorpe Board of Education it wants its share of the 1 percent levy, previously approved by the school heads and which becomes effective Jan. 1.

Under the borough levy, it will now be possible to tax out-of-town residents who are employed in the borough. Under the school levy, it was only possible to tax local residents. Attorney Joseph Engler, solicitor, was instructed to take the steps necessary to put the plan into action.
