$1K grand prize winner revealed in Times News coverall bingo contest

The number 05213 was read off.

And with that, one person found themselves $1,000 richer through their participation in the Times News coverall bingo contest.

The grand prize bingo winner was announced Wednesday at Mason’s Cold Beer in Jim Thorpe.

The lucky winner was Christine Marek, of Nesquehoning.

Retired, Marek said she was shocked when she heard her number drawn.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Marek said. “I had someone else check the ticket to be sure.”

Marek said that the contest piqued her interest.

“It sounded like a really fun thing to do,” she said. “We do get the paper every day, and it was something to do.”

So what exactly is the retired Nesquehoning woman going to do with her winnings?

“I’m going to Disney World the beginning of February,” she said. “I’m really excited.”

In addition to the main prize, seven smaller prizes were given out, including a case of Zimmerman’s iced tea; a $20 gift card to Zig’s Beverage, Weissport; a $20 gift card to Popcorn Buddha, Stroudsburg; a $20 gift card to Cherry’s Diner, Kresgeville; a $25 gift certificate to Rustic Roots Salon, Lehighton; a $25 gift certificate to Jokers Are Wild Game Cafe in Lehighton; and a one-year membership to the Pyramid Sports Performance & Fitness Center, Lehighton.

Todd Mason, owner of Mason’s Cold Beer, said there was a lot of excitement in the air.

“We were glad to have sponsored the game, and happy to be able to host the final drawing,” Mason said.

Charles Steward, owner of the Jim Thorpe Market, said the contest had perfect timing with the holiday season.

“We heard a lot of positive feedback from the game,” Steward said. “It brought out a lot more people than we’ve seen.”

Other sponsors for the contest were Dean Anthony’s, A.F. Boyer Hardware & Guns, Redline Floor Covering Inc., Rentschler Chrysler and Hager Furniture.

Jen Benninger, Times News advertising director, thanked Mason’s Cold Beer and the Jim Thorpe Market for being the main sponsors of the contest.

Jennifer Rowden, Times News marketing director, said the bingo drawing began on Sept. 8.

Rowden said contestants had to coverall bingo and the last number was released on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

“We wanted to wrap up before the holiday so people had extra money,” Rowden said. “I think it created a lot of excitement.”

Rowden noted the Times News received more than 530 valid cards that were returned to them.

“People would send us pictures,” she said. “We also got some really nice messages from some of the players.”

June Naimon of Albrightsville said she looked forward to the anticipation of the newspaper arriving every day.

“I couldn’t wait to get my paper,” Naimon said. “And If I didn’t see the paper, I was going to go up and buy the paper.”
