Angel tree

The Tamaqua Salvation Army Angel Tree program is currently underway. Designed to make the Christmas season brighter for children in need, Angel Trees can be found at numerous businesses as well as the Salvation Army Community Center, 105 W. Broad St.

The trees are hung with tags containing the name, age, gender, clothing size and special Christmas needs/wishes of an individual child. Participants select a tag, then purchase new items based on the tag information. The unwrapped items, along with the tag, should be returned to the Salvation Army no later than Dec. 11. Cash donations are also being accepted.

Rush-Ryan seniors

The Rush-Ryan-Delano Senior Citizens met Nov. 13 at the Ryan Township Fire Company with 37 members in attendance. President Robert Neifert conducted the business session after opening the meeting with the invocation “Keep Our Nation in Thy Care.”

Birthday wishes were extended to Betty Bablo, Lois Millet, Doris Brobst, Muriel Wehr, Edna Romanick and Sharon Haldeman. Nancy Eisley and Larry Bower were added to the sick list.

Upcoming events were updated, including a Nov. 19 trip to Mohegan Sun in Wilkes-Barre; Nov. 26 trip to Hershey for a show, dinner and the casino; Dec. 4, Christmas party at Capriotti’s in McAdoo. The group also discussed a trip to Penn’s Peak in 2019.

The group meets the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at the Ryan Township Fire Company in Barnesville and is open to anyone 55 or older.

Garden club

The Lewistown Valley Garden Club held its annual dinner meeting on Oct. 23, with special guest Al Kohn providing program on woodworking and wire art formations.

The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Nov. 27 in the social hall at Zion Church of the Lewistown Valley. The program will focus on crafts. The arrangement for judging will be dried flowers with a salt shaker, while outdoor greens sprigs/branches will be the focus for the specimen judging.

Snow rules

With the onset of winter weather last week comes the reminder that snow could fall at any time. Tamaqua residents are reminded of borough rules concerning snow removal.

Property owners are required to maintain a clear path, at least 3 feet wide, on sidewalks. Snow and ice must be removed from these pathways within 24 hours of the end of a snowstorm.

Snow, ice and other materials may not be thrown into the streets. Fines of $25 and up may be imposed on anyone caught throwing snow or ice into the street, or who fails to maintain a snow-free pathway.

People who plow snow from in front of homes and businesses must remove any piles of snow they create. Anyone piling snow in the street or parking areas could be cited.

Residents are asked to refrain from piling snow near fire hydrants or on top of storm drains and are encouraged to clear snow from these areas. Call 570-668-3444 or 570-668-0300 for more information.

Bethany EC

The Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8 and 10:30 a.m. worship services this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. Sunday school classes meet at 9:15 a.m.

Activities for the next week include: Monday, Celebrate Recovery women’s training at 5 p.m., Celebrate Recovery men’s training at 5:15 p.m., Celebrate Recovery meets at 6:30 p.m.; Wednesday, TYM Remix meets at 6:30 p.m., GriefShare meets at 7 p.m., worship practice is at 8 p.m.

St. John’s Lutheran

The Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at the 9:15 a.m. worship service this Christ the King Sunday in St. John’s Lutheran Church. The service will include Holy Communion.

Sunday school classes will meet at 10:30 a.m.

On Nov. 29, the property committee will meet at 7 p.m., angel choir rehearses at 6 p.m., shepherd choir meets at 6:30 p.m. and chancel choir practices at 7:30 p.m.

Primitive Methodist

Pastor Rick Clemson will officiate at the 10:45 a.m. worship service this Sunday in American Primitive Methodist Church. The service will include Baptism.

Sunday school classes are held at 9:30 a.m.

Hope in the Mountains NFG are held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays.
