Pleasant Valley High School Drama Club presents “You Can’t Take it With You”

This weekend “You Can’t Take It with You” premieres at Pleasant Valley High School.

Shows are Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. in the high school auditorium.

Under the direction of Dan and Marcie Mulligan and production assistant Donna Morris, the play is described as a “zany comedy.”

“You Can’t Take It with You” is the story of the Sycamore family, a madcap group of eccentrics living in New York in the 1930s.

Grandpa Vanderhof (Jaxon Havens), the patriarch of the family, has taken up unusual hobbies in his retirement, including collecting snakes and attending college commencements.

The rest of his family also have unusual hobbies such as his daughter, Penny (Jeanna DiAngelis), who writes a myriad plays that never get published, and Penny’s husband, Paul (Giovanni Marini), who spends most of his time inventing fireworks with his apprentice DePinna (Hannah Szmaciasz).

Granddaughter Essie (Bella Lindner) practices ballet nonstop while her husband (Anthony Long) serenades her with xylophone music.

Granddaughter Alice (Danielle Cleary) is the most practical and conventional member of the family, and when she brings home her employer and potential future husband, Tony (Jozef Janak), chaos erupts in the house, sabotaging the first impression Tony gets of Alice’s family.

The plot only gets sillier with the appearance of an overly dramatic Russian Ballet instructor (Aubrey Sawyer), an irate IRS agent (Aleelah Thompson), a drunken movie actress (Emily Gethen), and a Russian Grand Duchess (Sam Brooks).

Also featured are Gabby Larregui (Rheba), Ryan Morris (Donald), Zachary Smith (Mr. Kirby), Madison Jackson (Mrs. Kirby), and Emma Roberts, Evan Schmidt, Madison O’Neill, Rebecca Penny and Kaitlyn Lampke, as Department of Justice Agents.

Tickets are $6 for adults and $5 for students and can be purchased at the door.
