Little Free Library coming to Weissport

During Monday’s meeting of Weissport Borough Council, members were presented with a proposal to install a Little Free Library in the borough.

Sandra Kokinda, a former educator in Lehighton and member of the Weissport school reunion committee, presented the proposal.

The Little Free Library is a nonprofit organization that promotes reading, builds community and sparks creativity by fostering neighborhood book exchanges around the world. Currently there are more than 75,000 registered free libraries in all 50 states and in 88 countries.

Kokinda said, “We are trying to do things to help the children of Weissport.”

She told council that under the program, a box would be placed in the borough with books that children and adults can take for reading. In addition, books can be placed back in the box for others to enjoy.

There is no cost to participate in the program. Kokinda said that all costs for the program are covered by retired educators and other community members. She also told council that the box will be designed like a train caboose, which would tie into the community.

Council unanimously approved Kokinda’s proposal. The proposed box will be large enough to hold 20 or 30 books and will be installed in the spring of 2019 at Chantilly Goods on Bridge Street.
