Lehighton police to provide Taser training to officers hired by school district

Lehighton Police Department will provide Taser training to the part-time officers previously hired by Lehighton Area School District.

Borough police Chief Brian Biechy informed borough council on Monday that the district is getting Tasers for the two part-time officers they hired.

Biechy said the district wants the police department to train the school police officers, and that the matter is pending training.

In May, the school board hired Ronald Kazakavage and Peter Salerno, part-time school police officers, both at $30 per hour.

That came after the board in March approved the two new positions and said the officers would “provide a consistent presence” in district schools and at extracurricular activities.

The officers will each work up to 120 hours per month (30 per week) for 10 months.

The district received a grant when it was considering a school resource officer of $60,000 for the first year and $30,000 for the second year.

The officers will have full arresting powers and work under the supervision of the superintendent.

Adding the officers to the district payroll will increase Lehighton’s insurance package by $2,500 per year for the extra liability.

Board solicitor William Schwab said the district had to petition the court because the officers would be covering multiple jurisdictions.

The district had been looking into a school resource officer partnership with Lehighton borough and had proposed paying 80 percent to cover the officer, while the borough would pick up 20 percent. When the borough asked the school district to fund the officer 100 percent, however, administration began looking at other avenues.
