Domestic violence awareness in Carbon County

Every nine seconds, someone becomes the victim of domestic violence in the United States.

To raise awareness for this, Carbon County has named October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

On Thursday, the county commissioners approved a proclamation honoring the Domestic Violence Service Center and all it has done for victims over the years.

Tammy Rodgers, education coordinator for the Domestic Violence Service Center, thanked the commissioners and said that the center has provided services to over 400 adults a month in Carbon County and receives on average 450 hotline calls a month.

“That’s huge,” she said.

The proclamation recognizes the Domestic Violence Service Center, which began as the Women Center task force in 1977.

In June 1978, the task force was incorporated as the Domestic Violence Service Center, which serves Carbon County today. Since then, the purpose of the Domestic Violence Service Center has been to work toward the elimination of domestic violence.

The center’s services include providing legal advocacy to victims of domestic violence, including court accompaniment to PFA hearings, community support groups, one-on-one counseling and more. All services are free and confidential.

Anyone who is a victim of domestic violence and physical, mental and emotional abuse can call the center’s 24-hour hotline at 800-424-5600 to speak with a counselor advocate.
