Artz fails to advance

FLEETWOOD – Only a few months ago, Jacob Artz didn’t know if he was going to have a high school golf season in 2018. But things worked out and the Marian senior was able to get in his senior year.

He made the most of it.

Artz was one of a select few players to reach Monday’s PIAA East Regional Golf Championships at Golden Oaks Golf Course in Fleetwood. He shot 93, but did not advance to next week’s state championship. The cut line to make it to states was 82.

“During the summer I didn’t know if I was going to be playing,” he said. “I didn’t know we were going to have a team. We only had three kids before we got a bunch of freshmen that came in. To make it to regionals is a dream come true and something I’ll always cherish.”

Artz made triple bogeys on his first and fifth holes. From that point, he knew advancing to states would be difficult, so he just tried to play his best.

“I just grinded out the rest of the holes and tried to make a respectable score out of it,” he said. “I wish I would have driven the ball a little better.

“When I played here on Saturday, I was driving the ball really well and set myself up nice. Today I was all over the place and didn’t give myself a chance with the second shots.”

Artz, who was making his first appearance at regionals in his high school career, was thankful he could get in his final season.

“This year, I went out and had a lot of fun with the team and ended up doing pretty well, so I’m happy about that,” he said.

The Class 2A boys regional was won by William Mirams of Notre Dame (East Stroudsburg). The four-time District 11 champion shot 2-over par 74 for first place Monday.

The girls Class 2A East Regional title was won by Jessica McClellan of MMI Prep. She shot 5-over par 77.

Carson Bacha (Central York) took first place in boys Class 3A with a 3-under par 69, while Jade Gu of Pennsbury fired a 71 for first place in Class 3A girls.

The PIAA Championship Tournament will be played next Monday and Tuesday, 36 holes over two days, at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York.
