Bears clinch division crown in volleyball

The Pleasant Valley volleyball team locked up the Mountain Division title in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference on Thursday. The Marian and Jim Thorpe volleyball teams also picked up wins

VOLLEYBALL

PM West-Pleasant Vy.

Pleasant Valley celebrated senior night with a 25-7, 25-21, 25-21 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win over Pocono Mountain West.

Cameron Caffrey had 15 assists, seven kills, four digs and two blocks for the Bears (14-8-2, 10-5), while Ari Thourot dished out 10 assists and recorded five aces and two digs.

Seniors Desi Powell (15 kills, four digs, three aces) and Ari Weaver (seven kills, five digs, three aces) also played well as Pleasant Valley picked up its fifth-straight win and clinched the EPC Mountain Division title.

Lehighton-Marian

Marian swept Lehighton 25-18, 25-17, 25-18 in a Schuylkill League Division 1 match.

Tatianna Zeleniak had a big match with 22 assists, 10 digs and two kills for the Fillies (7-9, 7-6). Macie Mazaluski added 18 digs and five kills, while Antonina Zeleniak recorded 13 digs, Alivia Karchner tallied 12 kills, and Kate Spillman finished with 12 digs.

Emily Miller had six kills and five digs for the Indians (11-9, 4-9), while Lillian Brown tallied 20 digs. Alyssa Frey dished out 12 assists, five digs and two aces, and Samantha Banning tallied nine digs.

Jim Thorpe-Pine Grove

Jim Thorpe bounced back to down Pine Grove 19-25, 25-8, 25-20, 25-18 in a Schuylkill League Division 2 match.

Brandy Montemuro had 15 digs, 12 assists, five kills and two blocks for the Olympians (12-4, 9-4). Kelsey Carroll added 13 kills, 12 digs, five aces, four blocks and three assists.

Autumn Snyder finished with eight blocks and five kills, and Tamara Encarnacion recorded seven digs and four aces for Jim Thorpe, which won the JV match 2-1.

Pottsville-Tamaqua

Pottsville posted a 25-7, 25-8, 25-9 win over Tamaqua in a Schuylkill League Division 1 match.

Emily Amershek recorded five digs and one kill for the Raiders (5-12, 2-11), while Morgan Houser added three kills and one block. Kailyn Erbe had two digs.

BOYS SOCCER

Tamaqua-Sch. Haven

A balanced effort helped Tamaqua pick up a 3-1 win over Schuylkill Haven.

Tyler Steigerwalt, Nathanial Noftz and Jacob Rudy all recorded a goal and an assist for the Raiders, who owned a 16-7 edge in shots on goal and a 6-2 advantage in corners.

Luke Verta made six saves for Tamaqua.

Pine Grove-Palmerton

A quick start and a big game from Mitchell Lesh propelled Pine Grove to a 5-0 non-league win over Palmerton.

Lesh scored two of his three goals in the first half as the Cardinals built a 3-0 advantage. Cameron Raudabaugh and Bryce Weber also scored for Pine Grove.

GIRLS SOCCER

Blue Mountain-Lehighton

Sydney Riegel powered Blue Mountain to a 9-0 Schuylkill League Division 1 win over Lehighton.

Riegel finished with five goals, four of which came in the first half for the Eagles. Jacey Miller and Kylie Kutz also scored for Blue Mountain (16-2, 12-0), which had 34 shots on goal and benefited from an own goal by the Indians.

Alyssa Myers finished with 14 saves for Lehighton (1-13-2, 1-10-1).

FIELD HOCKEY

Palmerton-No. Lehigh

Northern Lehigh edged Palmerton 3-2 in Colonial League action.

Rachel Nonnemacher, Jada Mills and Gabby Myster all scored for the Bulldogs, who held an 11-6 edge in shots on goal. Mills and Olivia Romig recorded assists, and Kendall Heiney finished with four saves.

Emily Baumgardt and Abby Everett found the back of the cage for the Bombers, with Everett adding an assist.
