Street resurfacing project gets underway in Lansford

A street project being discussed for over two years is finally occurring in Lansford.

The resurfacing of Route 209 (Patterson Street) officially began Wednesday night and will continue for about six or seven days — weather permitting.

At a meeting of Lansford Borough Council on Wednesday, it was reported most of the major work will occur at night.

On Wednesday night reconstruction was happening in the Far East end of Patterson Street.

Motorists have become accustomed to daytime delays for several days because of contractors preparing for the resurfacing.

In addition, new handicap ramps were being installed for the past several months in the work area.

Council President Jared Soto said parking is prohibited in the work area.

The project was originally slated to occur two years ago but was delayed because work was needed on manhole replacements. The manholes were replaced by borough workers this past summer.

Former council member Rose Mary Cannon asked how much it cost the borough for the new manholes and inlets and how many man hours the project took.

“While they (borough workers) did an excellent job, the rest of the town went to pot,” she said.

Council member Bob Silver said he doesn’t have the information at hand but he will get it for her.

He said borough workers were used for the manhole replacement because the state gave notice they were ready to proceed with the project.

“We had to replace those inlets,” he said. “The previous council didn’t do anything.”

There was discussion that because the workers were doing the manhole project, repairs such as fixing potholes in other streets wasn’t done.

Because of the repaving project, a school bus stop location was changed.

The council approved the change from 24 E. Bertsch St. to the corner of Bertsch and Tunnel streets. Silver and council member Joe Butrie were opposed to the bus stop change, but the matter passed via a 3-2 vote.
