Local Sports Roundup: Results from Oct. 4

The Marian and Panther Valley girls volleyball teams earned wins on Thursday, keeping the Panthers unbeaten this season.

With PV’s victory, the Panthers also clinched the Schuylkill Division 2 title.

Jim Thorpe and Weatherly picked up victories in boys soccer, while Pleasant Valley earned a field hockey win.

VOLLEYBALL

Tamaqua-Marian

Marian got the best of Tamaqua for a 25-13, 25-15, 25-5 Schuylkill League victory.

Tatianna Zeleniak led the Fillies with 22 assists and six aces, while Kate Spillman chipped in with 10 digs.

Alivia Karchner (seven kills) and Lacey Blasko (six kills) contributed in the win.

Ella McLaughlin paced the Blue Raiders with 33 digs, while Emily Amershek finished with four kills and four digs.

Teammate Maddie Baddick added three assists, two digs and two aces.

Marian improves to 6-7 overall (6-5 in SL), while Tamaqua falls to 4-10 (2-9 SL).

Panther Valley at

North Schuylkill

Panther Valley cruised to a 25-5, 25-11, 25-11 Schuylkill League Division 1 win over North Schuylkill.

Olivia Dacey had 11 digs, nine kills and eight service points for the Panthers (13-0, 11-0). Erika Dubosky added nine kills, eight service points (four aces) and three blocks, while Sarah Zabroski dished out 17 assists and recorded five service points.

Panther Valley won the JV match, 2-0.

Jim Thorpe-Pottsville

Pottsville knocked off Jim Thorpe for a 25-18, 25-13, 25-14 Schuylkill League victory.

Kelsey Carroll paced the Olympians (10-4, 7-3) with 13 assists, 12 digs and eight kills, while Brandy Montemuro followed with 23 digs, 10 assists and seven kills.

Abbey McGinley (17 digs), Anna Shigo (nine digs, four kills) and Kristin Pompa (four blocks, three kills) contributed in the setback.

Blue Mountain-Lehighton

Blue Mountain defeated Lehighton for a 25-7, 25-15, 25-12 Schuylkill League win.

Samantha Banning recorded her 500th-career dig among her 15 on the night, while Lillian Brown chipped in with 20 digs and two aces.

Teammate Alyssa Frey added 12 digs, while Sydney Vincent finished with nine digs and three kills for Lehighton (8-8, 3-8).

BOYS SOCCER

Pine Grove-Jim Thorpe

Chris Condly’s goal in overtime lifted Jim Thorpe to a 2-1 Schuylkill League win over Pine Grove.

Ray O’Neil recorded the assist on the game-winning goal. The Olympians’ Leandro Ramirez scored the game’s first goal, while Andrea Mazella posted the assist.

Kingsley Ehling grabbed 10 saves in the win.

Jim Thorpe moves to 9-4-1 overall (7-3 SL), while Pine Grove slips to 9-4-1 (7-2-1 SL).

Pottsville-Lehighton

Pottsville defeated Lehighton for a 2-1 Schuylkill League victory.

Carter Strauss scored the Indians’ lone goal.

Daniel Mair added a goal and an assist for the Tide, while Egan Kauffman added the other score.

Zach Andrew finished with 11 saves in front of the Indians’ net.

Lehighton drops to 3-10-2 overall (1-9-1 SL), while Pottsville moves to 6-8 (3-6 SL).

Weatherly-Tri-Valley

Mason Gerhart’s two goals sparked Weatherly to a 2-1 Schuylkill League victory over Tri-Valley.

The Wreckers (4-8, 3-7) held a 17-11 edge in shots on goal, while the Bulldogs posted an 8-3 advantage in corners.

Connor Schwalm recorded the Bulldogs’ lone goal, while Ben Stiely was credited with the assist.

Wreckers’ keeper Ryan Fairchild finished with 10 saves.

FIELD HOCKEY

Pleasant Valley-ES North

Candice Fougere’s first-half goal was all Pleasant Valley needed to score a 1-0 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over East Stroudsburg North.

The Bears (4-10, 4-11) held a 10-5 edge in shots, while the Timberwolves sported a 12-8 difference in penalty corners.

So. Lehigh-Northwestern

Southern Lehigh blanked Northwestern for a 2-0 Colonial League win.

Bryn Hughes and Mackenzie Reese each scored goals for the Spartans (10-5, 9-4).

Teammate Morgan Benner was credited with an assist.

Tigers’ keeper Taylor Page finished with four saves.

Northwestern slips to 7-7-1 overall (6-6-1 in CL).

GIRLS SOCCER

Jim Thorpe-Nativity

Jim Thorpe and Nativity tied 1-1 in Schuylkill League action.

Shannon Hogarty scored a goal for the Olympians (5-7-2, 2-6-1).

Tori Hunyara posted a goal for Nativity (4-6-2, 3-6).

Jim Thorpe keeper Kate Boss had 10 saves, while her counterpart Rory Reiley finished with 18.

Emmaus-Pleasant Valley

Pleasant Valley and Emmaus played to a 1-1 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference tie.

Brianna Clark scored the Bears’ lone goal, while Lily Schmitt recorded the assist.

Kellie Reith posted the Green Hornets’ goal, while Aurora Cruci earned the assist.

PV keeper Sam Merklin finished with 16 saves.

Pleasant Valley moves to 9-5-1 overall, and 8-4-1 in the EPC.

Palmerton-Catasauqua

Amy Huber’s goal lifted Catasauqua to a 1-0 Colonial League win over Palmerton.

Taylor Richards had the assist, while Roughs’ keeper Maddy Hicks made 10 saves to preserve the shutout.

The Bombers are now 2-9.

JR. HIGH BASKETBALL

7TH GRADE

Tamaqua-Pottsville

Pottsville rolled to a 41-26 win over Tamaqua.

Lorelei Plasha paced the Blue Raiders with 10 points, while Ava Agosti added eight.
