Effort man to appear in court for alleged sexual assault of girl

An Effort man has been charged with a sexual assault of a teenage girl.

Dana Westover, 54, faces charges on three counts each of aggravated indecent assault and indecent assault, and one count each of endangering welfare of children, corruption of minor, and unlawful contact with a minor.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by Pennsylvania State Trooper Tristan Bennett of the Criminal Investigation Unit at Troop N — Fern Ridge Station:

At 9 a.m. July 8, Bennett was contacted by a man, who said his 13-year-old daughter was sexually assaulted last year by Westover, a family friend, while at a sleepover.

The victim told police that on Thanksgiving evening, Nov. 23, 2017, she went with her mother to visit her grandparents in Reeders.

She received permission from her mother to leave with Westover and spend the evening with him and his girlfriend at their residence in Chestnuthill Township.

The victim said Westover drove her to the residence and hung out in the backyard of the residence in a camping tent.

The victim said she watched YouTube videos and looked at some photographs with Westover while in the tent, and that during the later evening hours they both fell asleep in the tent. There she was assaulted. The victim said she returned to the tent and kept her distance from Westover, and that later that morning, Westover drove her back to her grandparents’ house, where she told relatives about the assault.

The victim said her mother and grandparents drove to Westover’s residence and confronted him.

On July 23, Bennett interviewed the victim’s mother about the investigation, and the mother said she did give her daughter permission to leave with Westover on Nov. 23 after she requested.

The victim’s mother said.

Westover never denied the allegation, and said he made a mistake.

At 9 a.m. Sept. 12, Westover arrived at the Fern Ridge barracks for a scheduled polygraph regarding this investigation.

While at the station, Westover told Bennett and the polygraph examiner that he no longer wanted to be polygraphed about the incident unless it was closed in exchange for information he had regarding a criminal matter.

Westover then confessed to the incident.

Westover is free on $50,000 unsecured bail.

Westover is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing at 10 a.m. Oct. 5 before District Judge Colleen Mancuso of Brodheadsville.
