Rush Township supervisors extend deadline for road work

At its monthly meeting on Thursday evening, Rush Township supervisors granted Franzosa Trucking Inc. an extension for completion of the 2018 Road Improvement Project road project.

Franzosa will have until Oct. 31 to complete the project that was previously scheduled to be completed by Sept. 20. “The reason why everything is so backed up is that the rain has everybody so backlogged. It’s unbelievable,” Supervisor Shawn Gilbert said.

The road improvement project is being completed in phases, and much of the work is yet to be completed. Two weeks of milling work, which is the first step in the repair process, will occur over the next two weeks.

In other business, Police Chief Ken Zipovsky reported that his department received 371 calls in August, which represented an increase of 35 percent over July. He attributed the increase to the pursuit of fugitive Shawn Christy, who made his presence known in lower Luzerne and upper Schuykill counties. Christy broke into at least two area homes and two businesses.

Zipovsky also announced that the township will hold a Halloween 5K race along with a trunk or treat event to be held on the Hometown Market grounds. The race will start at noon while the trunk or treat will run from 1-4 p.m.

The next meeting of the board of supervisors will take place at Oct. 18.
