E. Penn continues to work on community center

The East Penn Township supervisors continue to make improvements to the township community center, while future plans for the building remain uncertain. Their latest project is to renovate the bathrooms.

Last month, the supervisors rebranded the former East Penn Social Hall as the East Penn Township Community Center.

The building, located at 403 Blue Mountain Road, Ashfield, is available to rent for weddings and parties throughout the year, in addition to being used for supervisors’ meetings.

On Tuesday, the supervisors voted 4-0 to go ahead with a project to renovate the bathrooms and make them handicap accessible.

The project is estimated to cost $13,600, which will come from the township’s capital projects account. The contractor is Larry McCullion & Son Electrical Construction of Summit Hill.

“No matter what we decide to do here, we’re going to have to make them (handicap accessible), and they’re not working properly, and they’re really in bad shape,” said Steven Heckman, township supervisor.

Supervisor William Schwab said before the vote that the township has about $90,000 in its capital account.

The supervisors also got a quote to do concrete work at the entrance to the building, but they took no action on it Tuesday night. The cost was estimated at $7,300.

Heckman said the bathrooms represented a better return on investment at the moment, and suggested the supervisors reconsider work outside the building in 2019. The supervisors have also discussed paving and accessibility improvements outside the community center.

In 2017 the supervisors looked at a full renovation of the building, which could have cost over a half-million dollars, but they didn’t go through with it.

At the time, residents recalled how a few decades ago, the venue was so popular that it had to be rented months in advance.

They later looked at selling it, but no buyers came forward. Last October a committee was named to run the building, including Heckman and Supervisor Alice Berger.

Since then, they have continued to rent the building for events like banquets, weddings and receptions — about a dozen so far this year with two more to come. The community center holds 400 people with an available bar and kitchen.
