Weatherly boys record sweep

We have a new kid in town and it’s making its presence felt.

The Weatherly boys’ cross country team has the rest of the Schuylkill League Division II taking notice.

That was evident on Wednesday during a soggy run on the Marian course.

Riding the legs of Scotty Zoscin and Anthony Maguschak, the Wreckers swept perennial Division 2 powers Marian and Mahanoy Area as well as Tri-Valley in the four-team meet.

Zoscin led the field with a time of 16:57 while Maguschak finished in fourth place with a time of 18:46 to provide the springboard the Wreckers needed.

The Wreckers point-producers featured three freshmen, as well. Frankie Willis finished fifth overall in a time of 18:56, Brady Walters hit the tape in at time of 18:59 to take seventh place, while Walters and Ricky Ray was a ninth-place finisher with a time of 19:49.

Those five top runners for Weatherly added to the triple win as they beat the Colts, 25-33, the Golden Bears, 23-35, and Tri-Valley 15-44.

“Our boys team did really well,” said spirited Weatherly coach Paul Schertrumpf. “We had a really good run from our top five. They grouped well today. Last week, we didn’t have a really good grouping when we ran at Minersville. Today, it was important to have a good grouping. Especially with going against really good teams. This is huge, it’s been a while.”

Marian’s Justin Armaga (18:58) and Gavin Vercusky (19:20) came in sixth and eighth place respectively, to help the Colts defeat both Mahanoy Area and Tri-Valley

“We’re not that strong with the boys this year, but we are a young team. We lost six seniors from last year, but we are learning and we getting better,” said Marian coach Tom Kostic.

Fillies capture a pair

Marian’s girls ran to victory, defeating two of the three teams it faced, with the lone loss, 23-33, to a strong Tri-Valley contingent. The Fillies defeated Mahanoy, 24-31, and picked up a 25-31 victory over Weatherly. The Wreckers did carve out a win of their own, staving off Mahanoy Area, 25-32.

“I like the way our girls are coming around,” said Kostic. “Our goal is to keep getting better with each race.

“Where we want to be later in the season is the key. If we continue to improve, we should be fine come districts.”

Nikki Capparell led the Fillies and was the overall girls’ winner in the race with a time of 20:11, well ahead of second-place finisher Samantha Masser (20:54) of Tri-Valley.

Adding to the point totals for Marian was Carolyn Mehallo, who finished eighth overall with a time of 22:32. Weatherly’s Abby Hernandez clocked in at 23:06 for a ninth-place overall finish for the Wreckers.
