Lower Towamensing discusses road concerns

The sight triangle at one of the entrances to Moyer Place came up again at the Lower Towamensing Township supervisors meeting Tuesday night.

Resident Donald Griffith stated his case as to why he thinks Moyer Place is a roadway under township ordinance and not a private road. Chairman Brent Green has repeatedly said it is a private road. He said the township doesn’t maintain the road, nor do they plow it in the winter.

Griffith wants parking to be banned in front of the house at that corner of Moyer and Little Gap Road going away from Palmerton. He said it blocks the line of sight down Little Gap Road.

Green said Lower Towamensing Township doesn’t have a police force, and the Pennsylvania State Police won’t handle parking issues.

“Put the sign up and the people won’t park there,” Griffith said.

Green once again suggested the idea of making Moyer Place a one-way street. The gravel road forms a U-shape behind the houses on Little Gap Road and comes out at another point about five houses toward Palmerton.

“If you come in on a one-way street, it isn’t a sight triangle,” he said.

In questions after the meeting, Green said the township has received letters from some residents in that area supporting the idea of making Moyer Place a one-way road. He said he doesn’t know exactly what the township would have to do to make it a one-way street, because they haven’t looked into it. The first step would be for all of the residents along Moyer Place to agree to the change, since it is their road.

In other discussion, the supervisors covered these agenda items.

• A budget workshop date was tentatively set for 9 a.m. Oct. 1. This will be confirmed once the township secretary has an opportunity to check the date for scheduling conflicts.

• Trick-or-treat will be held from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 27.

• A donation to Family Promise of Carbon County for $180 was considered, but not decided. The supervisors need to check how much money is left for community donations. They gave to the Carbon County Fair and Palmerton library.

• $1,190 will be needed for a truck repair.

• $2,000 was approved for the Road Maintenance Department to purchase steel posts before the cost goes up. The price has begun to increase.

• Spending up to $3,000 was approved for a rubber border to keep the mulch in the Aquashicola playground.
