Cubs make special delivery

For over a decade the Palmerton Holy Trinity Lutheran Church’s Scout Cub Pack 41 has been a personal delivery service for the senior residents of Palmer House.

On Saturday afternoon, five Scouts led by committee Chairwoman Brandy Kresge gathered at the annual Palmerton Festival to take food orders from the seniors and deliver the treats by red wagon to the home.

On this year’s menu was fried ravioli, Halushki and mac ’n’ cheese, along with the Scouts’ own homemade meatballs and peach cobbler.

Last year’s favorite order was Holy Trinity’s molasses cookies, said Cub Scout mother and volunteer, Rachel DeMicco.

According to DeMicco, the seniors at the Delaware Avenue home can pick from over the 20 nonprofit, homemade items on the menu.

“The boys really look forward to it,” she said.

“It’s Julius’ (her son) favorite part. He looks forward to it every year,” said DeMicco.

The Webelos and Bears of the kindergarten through fifth-grade pack, are broken down into three shifts over the weekend.

“This whole process starts midsummer,” DeMicco said.

“It’s really good for the boys. We have a lot of people come to our stand and talk about their own experiences in Scouts or their kids’ experience. It’s a really good thing for the boys and helps them stick with it,” she said.

“The seniors are so appreciative. It’s one of our favorite things to do,” said Paul DeMicco, Scout Den leader.

The fair delivery service allows for seniors to still enjoy the festival without leaving their homes.

“They still get to participate and don’t have to trek out in the rain,” Kresge said.

Kresge said the tradition is all about community.

“To be able to help out those who can’t get over here. It lets the boys know about being a community. A lot of us grew up here and have our kids here. It’s nice to know you can count on each other to be there,” she said.
