Thanks to fabulous weather, the 11th annual Weissport Redneck Festival had excellent attendance.

The festival, held Saturday and Sunday in the Weissport Park, featured such competitions as the Daisy Duke contest, Bedknobs and Rednecks bed race and chariot race (redneck style).

For the contests held at the gazebo, spectators used bales of hay as their seating.

Duane Dellecker, a founder of the festival, served as emcee for most of the contests, cracking jokes and playing the role of redneck from his accent to his attire.

The festival raises funds for recreation in Weissport. In addition, numerous other organizations benefit by having stands at the event.

All the competitions are done more for laughter than for victory.

For example, the Korniest Couple contest had four couples who answered random questions about them and their spouses.

Those couples were Dennis and LouAnn Snoke of Reading, Mike and Anne Quinn of Fleetwood, Bud and Ann Kohl of Ephrata and Shannon and David Madison of Levittown. Questions ranged from their sleeping attire (some said none) to what vehicle they used for their first date.

An animal rescue group had a dunk tank with an accompanying “Redneck Jail.” Individuals who went into the jail had to raise money or take a turn in the dunk tank. Their prize was a plastic pitcher on which was written in black marker: “Official Redneck Moonshine Mug.”

A large “Redneck Festival” banner consisted of various worn T-shirts with crude letters written on them. The T-shirts were strung across the park entrance.

There were rides, food stands and even a Redneck Festival souvenir stand.

Dellecker said the festival was not only a success, but as always, a lot of fun.
