Traffic increase

We’re in the midst of the West End Fair, and that changes traffic volume. Please be aware.

Strong Women info

Keri Byrnes from Penn State Extension will be presenting an informational session on the Strong Women series from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the Eldred Township Community Center in Kunkletown in Room 153.

Regional meeting

The Chestnuthill-Jackson-Eldred-Ross-Polk regional comprehensive meeting is 7 p.m. Thursday at the Chestnuthill Township Municipal Building in Brodheadsville.

Seniors menu

The Chestnuthill Seniors meeting at Zion Lutheran Church Wednesdays and Fridays can order a hot lunch. For this Friday it is honey mustard chicken. For next Wednesday it is oven fried chicken.

That order must be placed with the site manager by 11 a.m. the day before at 570-242-6770.

Special programs are offered from time to time. At 11 a.m. Aug. 29 is a program on glaucoma risk factors.

Effort Pantry

The SFRC food pantry at Effort UMC will be open from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

The church is seeking a donation of a second room air conditioner for the food pantry. One has already been donated.

Anyone ready to donate one can call the church at 570-629-1890 to verify it is still needed.

Such units help control moisture and air quality in food storage areas.

Post cleanup

American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert is holding its monthly cleanup Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m. Tasks will be assigned and no tools are needed.

Dream ride benefit

The annual United Dream Ride benefiting Dream Come True, Blue Ridge Chapter, is Sunday.

Registration is from 8:30 to 10:45 a.m. at the American Legion Post 927, 646 Fairgrounds Road, Gilbert.

A donation breakfast sponsored by the Sons of the American Legion at the Legion is included.

Kickstands go up 11 a.m. For the registration cost per person, which includes one lunch and one soda at Knoebels, no substitutions, contact group President Everett Shaver, 570-977-8208 or everett.shaver@yahoo.com.

Motorcycles and cars welcome. It is a scenic ride, rain or shine, starting at the American Legion and winding through scenic central Pennsylvania and ending at Knoebels Amusement Resort in Elysburg.

Salem preacher

Supply pastor Patti Hoyt will fill the pulpit at Salem UCC in Gilbert this Sunday.

The Rev. Randy Lentz will be at Salem UCC the month of September.

UMW picnic

The Effort United Methodist Church family picnic will be held on Sunday after the 11 a.m. service as hosted by the UMW. A sign-up sheet for side dishes, desserts and number attending has been announced and can be found on the welcome center. Secret Pals will be revealed at this time, and new Secret Pals for the upcoming year will be received.

Schools open

The Pleasant Valley School District will open the doors for the students’ first day of the school year on Monday.

Baseball trip

Man Up from Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church in Brodheadsville is going to the IronPigs vs. Rail Riders on Monday. The cost per person includes transportation, ballgame and all-you-can eat buffet. Seats are limited. Polk Supervisors

The Polk Township Supervisors will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at the municipal building in Kresgeville.

Knit & Crochet

Zion Lutheran’s Knit & Crochet group will meet at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Republicans

The West End Republican Club will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Lakeside Restaurant, 5154 S. Hamilton Blvd., Saylorsburg. Republican-minded citizens are encouraged to join the group to socialize, listen, discuss and learn.

Those wishing to eat before the meeting should arrive by 6 p.m.

Animal League

The monthly meeting of the Monroe Animal League will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Eastern Monroe County Library, Route 611/North Ninth Street, Stroudsburg.

MAL promotes spay/neuter and humane education as a way to control pet overpopulation, and thus relieves cruelty and suffering among animals. Members believe this to be the best way to achieve a future with no more homeless animals.

All Monroe County animal lovers are encouraged to attend.

Registration time

Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church, Brodheadsville, has announced registration is open to its Missionettes and Royal Rangers program which will begin Aug. 29 and will be going back to the normal Wednesday evening scheduled activities.

The groups are: Sunbeams, girls and boys ages 1-3 years old; Rainbows, girls and boys ages 3-5 years old; Missionettes, girls in grades K through seventh; and Royal Rangers, boys in grades K through seventh.

Orphan Ministry

Sandie Flannery, of the Orphan Outreach Ministry, will be traveling to Ukraine from Monday to Sept. 1 to visit the orphans in Vorzel Baby House and Zulachchia.

While there, she will also see the house that Our Lady Queen of Peace Church is sponsoring for a group home for the older disabled orphans. She will also be consulting with doctors and training orphanage staff on therapeutic techniques and stimulating activities for the most involved children.

There will be lots of new pictures and stories of the children, their continued needs and those available for adoption.

Prayers for her safe travels and for a successful mission trip are requested.

Yard sale

Zion Lutheran Church, Brodheadsville, will hold its annual yard sale fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 7 and Sept. 8.

Youth Field Day

This free yearly event will be held Sept. 8 at Camp Trexler in Jonas for children ages 8 to 14, rain or shine. It includes many activities, including fishing, game calling, trapping, dog handling, archery range, shotgun range and more, and a free lunch for all attendees and accompanying adults or legal guardians.

Paw party soon

Pocono Pet Nanny and Friends will celebrate her 15th anniversary paw party from noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 16 at Chestnuthill Township Park, 221 Route 715, Brodheadsville.

It is a pet friendly (on leash) event and will include dog rescues, live music, vendors, refreshments, tricky trays and fun.

Golf benefit

Monroe County Habitat for Humanity has announced its annual golf tournament. It will be held at the Great Bear Golf Club on Sept. 21.

This is the 22nd such event and through the last 21 years it has raised more than $152,000, of which 100 percent has benefited the MCHH mission that everyone in Monroe County have a safe and decent place to live.

Flea market ahead

St. Peter’s UMC, Saylorsburg, will hold its annual outdoor flea market on Sept. 22. The church is located on Route 115 next to Dollar General.

Vendor tables are still available by calling 570-992-6930 and asking for Skip or Marie. The church kitchen will be serving lunch, beverages and home-baked treats. Flea market hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The rain date is Sept. 29.
