Girls basketball team headed to JT Hall

The 2012 Jim Thorpe girls basketball team was the only girls’ cage team in school history to win the Schuylkill League Division 1 championship. The squad also set a record for wins in a season by posting a mark of 21-5.

In addition to those accomplishments, the Olympians won the Lehighton Christmas tournament and qualified for the league playoffs for the first time.

The highlight of their season was beating Blue Mountain three out of four times, including in the Schuylkill League Division 1 playoff game and again in the District 11 playoffs.

The team was led by First Team All-Stater Celeste Robinson, who broke the Jim Thorpe all-time scoring record with 1,699 points. She finished the season averaging 24.5 points per game. Kristin Lawrence was outstanding from the 3-point line, making 45 three-pointers.

The other members of the team were Cristyna Batts, Danielle Becker, Gabby Binder, Catherine Condly, Nikki Ennis, Amy Jascot, Jeanna McElmoyle, Chastity Mosteller, Alissa Rusbarsky and Chelsea Smelas.

Rob Kovac was the head coach and his assistants were John Koehler, Tricia McElmoyle and Trish O’Gurek. The team was managed by Kyle Lawrence, the brother of Kristin.

This completes the biographies of the six inductees entering the 2018 Jim Thorpe Area Sports Hall of Fame. The other five are Ashley Nicola, Hillary Reis Weinert, Brian “Pip” Rehrig, Ed Hedes, and Robert Hodor.
