A look back: July 31, 1997

The Carbon County Commissioners agreed yesterday to seek the necessary permits from Nesquehoning Borough to build new K-9 kennels on land the county owns on the Broad Mountain, near the county prison.

The kennels, proposed by Fred Osifat, the county’s director of planning and development, would be in a 40-by-75-foot pole building that will have 36 interior dog runs. He estimated the cost would be $26,000-30,000, which doesn’t include sewage and water facilities.

The existing K-9 kennels are located in Lehighton borough, where they are exposed to blowing snow, howling winds and driving rains, elements the commissioners would like to see go away in the best interests of providing better treatment for the dogs.
