Polk supervisors discuss use of biosolids

Polk Township supervisors briefly discussed the possibility of biosolids being used on farmland in the west end of the township Monday evening.

“It’s a DEP (Department of Environmental Protection) issue,” Supervisors’ Chairman Brian Ahner said. “I don’t know if we are for or against it.”

Township solicitor James Fareri explained to those in attendance that biosolids is sludge from wastewater treatment plants that DEP has approved for use on farmland.

Ahner said that he has been contacting state representatives about the issue to let them know that the township has concerns.

“We have no authority to stop it,” he said.

As far as he knows, the crops being grown on the land are not for human consumption. If the DEP approves the landowner’s request, then the approval is effective for the life of the farm, Ahner said.

He didn’t want to go into the specific location of the farm at this time.
