Weissport council discusses drug paraphernalia ordinance

Weissport council discussed combating the drug epidemic, a horror movie and a park transfer during last week’s borough council meeting.

Solicitor Greg Mousseau, advised the borough to pass a new drug paraphernalia ordinance that would give the borough more of a say in how the matter is handled.

Those caught with drug paraphernalia would have to pay a fine issued by the borough instead of directly dealing with police. Members agreed to pass the ordinance with the goal of discouraging the possession of drug paraphernalia at its source.

Horror movie

Mousseau also addressed the specifics of having a horror movie shot in Weissport.

He addressed the possible insurance and liability issues that could arise along with the council’s worries on how Weissport and its people would be portrayed.

Council decided to further look into this matter before making an official decision.

Other business

Vice President Brenda Leiby, asked for an update on having the park transferred over to the borough’s name. However, the matter is not yet resolved.

According to Mayor Paulette Watson, any work done on the park will be on a strictly volunteer basis. Members agreed to pay a $204.50 overage for the purchase of mulch that was not covered by their park grant.

Watson also discussed recent thefts in the borough. The issue will be further looked into by the borough’s police.

The borough’s police car will soon go in for repairs because its siren and horn are not working correctly, along with their computer due to an error while reading files.

So far this year, Weissport collected $42,474.09 in taxes, with a total of $30,757.54 collected to fund garbage collection.
