Carbon County’s Veterans Treatment Court is looking for a few good men and women to help its participants.

Officials with the specialty court are hosting an information session on how to become a veteran mentor at 6 p.m. Friday at the American Legion Post 123, 3 W. Ridge St., Lansford.

Veterans court works with veterans who are involved in the criminal justice system and have been approved for the program based on their offense.

It “promotes sobriety, recovery and sensitivity with a goal toward giving each participating veteran an opportunity for the best possible chance of getting back on track as a healthy, productive veteran and member of society.”

The program provides intervention programs to help veterans, while reducing recidivism and promoting public safety.

Currently, there are 15 active participants in the program and only seven mentors at this time.

In addition to a team of resources from the county, as well as addiction services, veteran mentors are needed to help participants succeed.

Veteran mentors are volunteers who are willing to serve as a sponsor, much like a sponsor does in Alcoholics Anonymous.

Mentors can be either male or female veterans, preferably having served in combat but not required, who are willing to assist the person by appearing at court appearances with them, spending some time outside the courts and being available to talk or visit the veteran when needed.

A variety of veterans are needed for the mentor program because participants can range anywhere from someone who was deployed recently to someone who served in combat decades ago.

Interested veterans are encouraged to attend the information night, which will clarify the role of a mentor within the Carbon County Veterans Treatment Court.
