Bowmanstown Lions award scholarships, install officers

The Bowmanstown-Parryville Lions Club held its annual charter dinner at the Bowmanstown Fire Company recently.

The following scholarships were presented:

• Bethany Thomas of Palmerton Area High School plans to go to the University of Virginia to study biology.

• Austin Sheckler, a Carbon Career and Technical Institute student from Palmerton, will continue his education at the Pennsylvania Institute of Technology.

Lyle Augustine, a former CCTI teacher, came from Las Vegas to present the award to Sheckler.

• Julia Frey of Lehighton Area High School was unable to attend. She will receive her award at the next Lions’ meeting.

A new member, Brandon Snyder, was inducted into the club. He was sponsored by his brother Kevin Snyder and inducted by District Governor Charles Zimmerman. Kevin is responsible for making him familiar with the club and to hold an orientation session.

Officers to be inducted were: Kathy Nunnemacher, president; Norman Engle Jr., first vice president; Loraine Neal, second vice president; Jessie Bamberger, third vice president; Albina Engle, secretary; Wayne Engle Sr., treasurer; Raymond Nunnemacher, lion tamer; Earl Reabold, tail twister; and Burdell Steigerwalt, chaplain.

Appointed to the board of directors were: Jean Smith, Henry Altemose, Jean Reabold, Kevin Snyder Jr., Ronald Engle, Joseph Herzog, William Ravert, Richard Beers, Heather Zellner and Emma Moyer.

Nancy Herzog, Larry Engle and Deborah Cintron are on the membership committee.

Loraine Neal received the Melvin Jones award, named for the father of the Lions’ Clubs International. She is the 35th club member to receive the award. Her name would be the first one on a new plaque since the old one was full.

The Lions PA foundation awards went to Emma Moyer, Viola Stigerwalt and Burdell Steigerwalt.

Norman Engle said the club is gearing up for a centennial celebration. There will be a Gold Centennial Award presented.

Outgoing president Ronnie Engle passed the gavel to Kathy Nunnemacher, incoming president. She acknowledged Burdell Steigerwalt as a charter member.

Locally the club gives scholarships, helps the food bank and Christian Action Council of Palmerton Area Churches, along with many other projects. A major fundraiser is setting up tents for private parties.
