Schuylkill hires new assistant district attorney

Schuylkill County has a new full-time assistant district attorney.

A. McCall Young of Jim Thorpe started her new job on May 29. She’ll be paid $45,686 a year.

County commissioners acknowledged her appointment at a public meeting Wednesday.

Young fills a position left vacant after Assistant District Attorney Debra A. Smith left the office to work as a public defender, said District Attorney Michael A. O’Pake.

Young will handle the cases of District Judge Anthony J. Kilker of Shenandoah.

A 2010 graduate of King’s College, Wilkes-Barre, and a 2014 graduate of Michigan State University College of Law, Young in July 2016 was hired as a temporary law clerk by Carbon County commissioners, a position she held until May.

“I’m very excited to work and serve my community,” she said of her new role in Schuylkill.

Also on Wednesday, county commissioners hired Cody Bettinger, Pottsville, as a part-time correctional officer at $19.71 an hour.

They also acknowledged the appointments of Matthew Hosenaver, Porter Township, as a deputy coroner/investigator in the coroner’s officer at a fee schedule, and Holly Mack, Frackville, as a secretary in Domestic Relations at $12.13 an hour.

In other personnel matters, seven people were appointed as interns. Typically, interns are not paid. However, through a new program with PA CareerLink, the county will be reimbursed for the $12 an hour wages of five of the interns.

The paid interns are Sarah Lecher, Norwegian Township, Human Resources; Trent Williams, Pottsville, Controller’s Office; Michael O’Pake Jr., Norwegian Township, District Attorney’s Office; Patrick Coyle, Norwegian Township, District Attorney’s Office; and Taylor Lindenmuth, Butler Township, Treasurer’s Office.

Unpaid interns are Tyrel Trautman, Ashland, Adult Probation; and Samantha Koons, Minersville, Mental Health/Developmental Services/Drug & Alcohol.
