GREENWICH (AP) — An off-duty New Jersey state police trooper has been killed in a crash in Pennsylvania.

Authorities say 30-year-old Brian McNally, of Bedminster, was alone in a vehicle that was eastbound on Interstate 78 in Greenwich, Berks County, when the crash occurred around 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

As he approached slowing traffic near a construction zone, authorities say McNally moved from the left lane into the right before rear-ending a tractor-trailer. His vehicle and the rear of the trailer caught fire, and McNally was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

The truck driver was treated at a hospital for minor injuries.

Authorities say McNally served in the Marine Corps reserve and was on his way home from weekend duty.

McNally was a member of the 154th State Police Class, graduating on Aug. 29, 2014. He was assigned to Washington Station.

According to a release by the New Jersey State Police, prior to becoming a member of the New Jersey State Police, McNally graduated from the Citadel Military Academy and was a captain in the United States Marine Corps Reserves.

“Tammy and I are deeply saddened by the death of trooper Brian McNally, who was killed in an off duty car crash yesterday evening while returning from weekend military service in Pennsylvania,” said New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the McNally family and the New Jersey State Police at this difficult time.”

“My heart goes out to the family of trooper McNally and to the troopers and marines who served with him,” said New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal. “He lived his life in service to New Jersey, to his country, and to the safety and security of all of us. It is with great sadness and gratitude that we honor his memory.”

“The men and women of the State Police are devastated by the tragic loss of Trooper McNally,” said Col. Patrick Callahan, acting superintendent of the New Jersey State Police. “Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with his family. Brian’s life was a testament to his dedication to service of both state and country.”

The crash is being investigated by the Pennsylvania State Police.
