Bombers’ Roe no-hits Lehighton

The guide to winning baseball games is actually pretty simple when you break it down. Situational hitting, and even better pitching, can help a squad finish on the plus side in the win department.

On Thursday in a local non-league matchup, Palmerton played the game of baseball to near perfection.

A no-hit performance from sophomore pitcher Tyler Roe, paired with 12 hits and 15 runs from the Blue Bombers (13-7) propelled them to a 15-0 romp over Lehighton in the Times News/Lehigh Valley Health Network Game of the Week.

The Bombers wasted no time getting started, jumping out to a 4-0 lead. Roe had an RBI in the inning, but the story in the first was the Tribe’s pitching control. Five players were walked in the inning, including four in a row.

Palmerton was patient at the plate throughout the day, putting many base runners on and bringing them in with timely hitting.

“We have eight seniors and we’re really solid all the way through the lineup, and we were patient today and then we also hit it when the right pitch was there,” said Palmerton head coach Brian Taschler. “I always credit these guys on their ability to see pitches. It’s definitely one of our team strengths and has helped get to where we are.”

By the end of the third, Palmerton opened up a 7-0 lead, and by the fifth, patience and aggressiveness at the plate put the game way out of reach.

The Bombers scored eight runs on six hits in the final inning to extend the lead to 15-0. Zach Silfies and Zach Schoenberger had two RBIs apiece while Wade Haydt and Eric Bolton also collected RBIs.

While Palmerton’s offense was key, Roe stole the show with a five-inning no-hitter.

He faced no more than four batters in any inning.

Roe’s fastball was the difference, as the pitch had some nice movement, tailing off to the right before it crossed the plate. Coupled with 80-plus mph speed, it can make for a difficult day at the plate for the opposition. That was true against the Tribe as Roe struck out 10.

“I’ve always kind of had that type of movement on my fastball since I started throwing harder, because of the way my arm comes across, and today I was pretty locked in and I was hitting the strike zone,” said Roe.

“This is honestly just a great feeling. It’s amazing, and I want to thank my teammates too for helping me out today. It’s definitely exciting to get a no-hitter.”

Roe ended the game in the bottom of the fifth by striking out the side. Palmerton advances to face Southern Lehigh at 10 a.m. Saturday morning in Limeport in the Colonial League quarterfinals.

STREAKING ... Palmerton is playing solid baseball heading into the Colonial League playoffs. The Bombers have won three out of their last four, outscoring their opponents 29-9, to earn the last spot in the six-team Colonial League playoffs.

ERRORS ... The Tribe struggled on the day, but a big reason for the Bombers 15-run performance — besides timely hitting — was some of the fielding errors on the Lehighton side. The Indians had six on the day, with five of those coming between the second and third innings.
