W. Penn Twp. hears odor complaints

A West Penn Township woman said she’s fed up with the stench by her home.

Susan Conner, who lives on Gulf Road, told the township’s board of supervisors on Monday that she can’t keep her windows open at night.

“It’s like having a dead deer on my porch,” Conner said.

After the meeting, Conner said she believes the smell is coming from Embrovac LLC, an agriculture company located on Dairy Road in Tamaqua.

Embrovac LLC primarily operates in the broiler, fryer and roaster chickens industry within the Agricultural Production — Livestock and Animal Specialties sector, according to an online description of the business.

Bill Anders, township engineer, said the state Department of Environmental Protection previously came out and spoke with Embrovac and said the business was beyond the criteria required.

Based on that, Anders said it was his understanding the owner was going to plant some trees to block the wind in an attempt to soften the odor, though he wasn’t certain that was the case.

Anders volunteered to meet with the owners to make them aware of the situation. Supervisors said they were fine with that.

The matter of an odor issue also recently came up in Rush Township.

Last month, several residents asked Rush officials to correct an odor issue they believe is destroying the fresh air in that community.

That smell was described as a floral, perfume or vanilla scent.
