Thorpe boys capture team title

ORWIGSBURG – On Day 2, Jim Thorpe’s boys’ track team rested its case.

Not since 2010 had the Olympians been able to seize the top prize in the Schuylkill County Track and Field Championships.

That dry spell was erased Wednesday afternoon at Blue Mountain High School, where the Olympians used their special gift to come from a third-place standing on Tuesday to overtake host Blue Mountain and Pottsville to claim the overall team title.

Jim Thorpe used its great speed to sprint past the field of some very talent-laden teams, including Tamaqua, North Schuylkill and Lehighton. Thorpe piled up huge numbers Wednesday, after scoring 35 points the first day and sitting in third place. However all of that changed when coach Frank Miller’s runners unloaded with 118 ½ points to score 153 ½ overall team points, overtaking Blue Mountain (122 ½) and Pottsville (106 ½).

Miller said the second day was going to be big for his team; it’s where all the speed the Olympians are noted for was going to surface.

“This is huge for our program, and to come out and score (a win) against the quality of competition,” said Miller. “We came back from a deficit, and our kids were focused on the bus ride up, they knew what they needed to do.”

Jim Thorpe broke two school records en route to the crowning, setting new marks in both the boys 4x100 and the boys 4x400. Thorpe didn’t capture the 1600 relay but finished second behind Pottsville. The Olympians’ time of 3:29.52 was the new school record, featuring Jeffrey Gorman, Sam Hydro, Nujai Walcott and Jarrin Geisinger Tamaqua’s solid team finished in third place in a time of 3:31.13.

In the 400-meter relay, Christian Selby, Waclott, Justin St. Hill and Geisinger teamed up to run a 43.51.

But all eyes were on Geisinger in the 100-meter dash. Throughout the season the speedy runner had been turning in solid times. He ripped off a win in the finals with a time of 11:22, holding off North Schuylkill’s Scotty Grigas (11:44).

“Once I got going, I did peek back to see if anyone was gaining on me,” said Geisinger, who was close to the school record of 11.12, which he set this season. “I didn’t take it for granted. I knew it was going to be hard and I knew these kids were going to push me.”

Hydro had a great run in the 1600-meter event, scoring a gold medal with a time of 4:41.04, while Jim Thorpe’s Chris Valdez came in third with a time of 4:44.94.

“I had a good feeling today,” said Hydro after his run. “I just went out and pushed a hard pace and let everyone stay with me. But I knew no matter how close they stayed with me that I was going to use my kick at the end.”

Thorpe picked up bonus points in the 200-meter dash from Walcott, who finished a strong second to winner Tahmir Spencer of Lehighton. Spencer hit the finish line in a time of 22:90, while Geisinger was fourth and Gorman sixth for Thorpe.

Spencer was determined to win the event after a false start in the 100.

“I had to make up for it,” he said. “I just wanted to work on my strides. I’m happy for the win, and now I’m looking forward to the district meet.”

Justin St. Hill had a great outing in the triple jump, where he set a personal best at 44-04. He turned away Tamaqua’s Barron Stauffenberg (41-08) and Lehighton’s Shae Blasiak (41-07), who came in second and third, respectively.

St. Hill had the top seed coming into the event, and said he was determined not to lose.

“I just was fighting to keep that top seed,” said St. Hill, who will play football next season at Wilkes University. “It was my best jump ever, and it couldn’t have come at a better time for our team.”

St. Hill said he was also using the motivating factor of getting a higher seed for districts with this latest gold medal.

There was a lot of good-will bantering in the discus event for the Jim Thorpe duo of Jason Scott and William Munson. Scott had a big-time throw of 142-06 to win the event. Munson, who was first in the shot put Tuesday, finished second with a throw of 131-08 Wednesday.

“We were kidding each other throughout the competition,” said Scott. “He makes it so much fun. (Tuesday) I was joking with him as he won the shot put.”

Tamaqua’s Tyler Disbrow finished third in discus at 127-06.

Tamaqua placed 1-2 in the pole vault event with Kahlid Holland winning with a vault of 13 feet, and Pierce Demetridas at 12-6 in second place. Two Jim Thorpe entrants, Jason Walck (11-6) and Trevor Keefer (11-6), placed fourth and sixth, respectively.

BLUE MOUNTAIN GIRLS CHAMPS...Blue Mountain captured the girls’ championship, easily running off with the win with a score of 136, well ahead of North Schuylkill (87), Lehighton (75 ½), Tamaqua (73 ½), Jim Thorpe (72) and Marian (47).

If ever there was a girl to run, it surely is Tina Capparell. In her final appearance at the league meet, Tina captured a pair of gold medals. She just missed setting a new league mark in the 800-meter run, and she also won the 1600-meter run.

“I wanted to set the league record,” said a smiling Capparell about the 800. Her time of 2:18.92 was two-tenths of a second off the mark set by Liz Manness in 2000. Capparell was well ahead of Jim Thorpe’s Lydia Wallace (2:25.01), who finished second. Two Tamaqua runners, Brianna Dumond (2:28.19) and Frances Kabana (2:32.52), ran fourth and fifth in that order.

Capparell later raced off to a gold medal in the 1600 with a time of 5:05.92, and was part of the 4x400 relay team that came in fourth.

“I felt real good all day,” said the Marian senior. “After I cooled down and got a little rest I felt really good even though it was a little warm today.”

Tamaqua’s Sarah Maue (5:30) and Kabana (5:48) ran fourth and sixth.

Marian’s Emma McClafferty just missed out a gold medal in the shot put with a second-place finish behind winner Kenda Rice (34-6) of Blue Mountain. McClafferty had a throw of 32-11 1/2. Coming in fifth place was Jim Thorpe’s Devon Lignore (31-06) and Rhylee Sherwood (30-03) of Lehighton placed sixth.

OTHER GIRLS … Jim Thorpe’s Emma Dunbar and Weatherly’s Emily Zoscin placed third and fourth in the 200 meter dash; Zoscin was second in the 100 and Dunbar fifth. The Tamaqua girls 4x100 relay team finished fourth with Caitlin Smith, Tressa Barron, Makenna Carroll and Kayla Sherry. Lehighton’s Kaia Slaw added a medal in the high jump (4-10) finishing third behind winner Kendal Bernardyn (5-02) of Mahanoy Area. Thorpe’s Wallace claimed a third spot.

MORE GUYS … Walcott added a second place in the 400-meter dash for Thorpe, teammate Gorman was fifth and Joseph Petit-Clair (Lehighton) was fourth and sixth in the 800. Brad Clemson and Derian Stianche (Tamaqua) claimed third and fourth place in the 800, Jim Thorpe’s Hydro fifth. Thomas Layden (4th) in the 110 meter hurdles for the Olympians, while Marian’s Gabrile Bauer added a fifth in the 100-meter dash.

Jim Thorpe’s Jarrin Geisinger crosses the finish line during Tuesday’s preliminaries at the Schuylkill League Track and Field Championships. Geisinger won gold in the 100 meters on Wednesday. RON GOWER/SPECIAL TO THE TIMES NEWS
