OSHA cites roofing contractor over fall hazard

A roofing contractor could face $110,971 in penalties for exposing workers to fall hazards while working at a church in Weatherly.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration announced citations against Strong Contractors Inc., of Bensalem, Bucks County, this week.

OSHA said in a news release that Strong Contractors were cited for exposing employees to fall hazards and failing to provide appropriate eye protection.

The citation resulted from a Dec. 21 inspection at Trinity Baptist Church in Weatherly, where Strong Contractors employees were working on a church roof.

OSHA received a complaint that workers were on 20-foot, steep, sloping roof without fall protection.

Employers are required to provide a safety system which may include a guard rail, safety net, or personal fall arrest system.

They also observed that employees were not wearing appropriate eye protection while operating pneumatic nail guns.

According to the news release, Strong Contractors has repeatedly violated OSHA regulations regarding worker safety. The company was also fined after an inspection at a work site in Montgomery County in March.

“Employers are legally responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace,” said Mark Stelmack, OSHA Wilkes-Barre Area Office Director. “This employer continues to demonstrate a consistent disregard for safety and health, leaving employees vulnerable to hazards that can cause serious or fatal injuries.”

It’s unclear whether Strong will actually have to pay its penalty in full. OSHA said the company had 15 days from April 20 to respond to comply or contest the findings before the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission.

A call to a phone number listed on the church’s Facebook page was not returned Wednesday night.
