Carbon County court

A Nesquehoning woman was sentenced to a prison term on four criminal counts on Friday in Carbon County court.

Judge Joseph J. Matika sentenced her and four others who previously pleaded guilty to criminal charges.

Lehighton arrest

Veronica Frank

, 44, was sentenced to a total of six to 12 months in prison on charges of possession of a controlled substance, methamphetamine; driving under the influence; driving under suspension, DUI related; and false identification to law enforcement.

She was arrested on Jan. 12 in Lehighton on the DUI, suspension and ID counts. She was arrested on the drug count by Nesquehoning police on Aug. 17, 2017. At the time she entered her guilty pleas she was serving a sentence in the state correctional institution at Muncy, Lycoming County, imposed by another court. She has since been paroled on that charge and is currently an inmate in the county prison on the instant charges.

The six to 12 months was imposed on the drug count. On the false ID charge she was sentenced to serve 30 days to 12 months; on the DUI count 72 hours to six months; and on the suspension count 30 days to six months. All the terms run concurrently.

She was fined $1,000 on the DUI charge, $1,000 on the suspension count, ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use, her license was suspended for a year and she must render a total of 50 hours community service when released on parole.

Drug counts

Cory Michael Whitley

, 25, of Lansford, was sentenced to serve 30 days to 12 months on a possession of a controlled substance and fleeing and eluding charges, concurrent with each other. On a possession of drug paraphernalia count he was placed on probation for a year, consecutive to the other charges. On a driving under suspension charge he was fined $200 and costs.

He was arrested on Oct. 4, 2016, by Nesquehoning police along Route 209. Police attempted to stop him but he fled, eventually being caught. Methamphetamine and paraphernalia items were found during the stop.

He was also ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use and render a total of 100 hours of community service when paroled.

Whitley is currently an inmate in the county prison on the charges. He was given credit for 18 days already served.

Other DUI cases

Two defendants who pleaded to DUI charges were sentenced.

Felicia M. Bigg-Carr

, 27, of Lansford, was sentenced to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, a fine of $1,000, one-year license suspension and render 25 hours of community service when released on parole.

She was arrested along Patterson Street by Lansford police on Oct. 20, 2017. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance.

Bigg-Carr is currently an inmate in the county prison serving a three- to six-month term for a probation violation. Matika ruled her sentence would run concurrent with the probation term.

Kody James Strouse

, 28, of Lewisberry, York County, was sentenced to serve 90 days to two years in prison followed by three years of probation.

He was arrested on April 20, 2016, along Market Street by Nesquehoning police. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance.

He was also ordered to pay a fine of $1,500, his license was suspended for 18 months, zero tolerance for drug or alcohol use and he must render 100 hours of community service.

He was given credit for 38 days already served. He will begin to serve the remainder of his time on May 5 at 6 a.m. and serve it on consecutive two-day weekends.

Drug count

Jason William Miller

, 33, of Lansford, was placed on probation for a year on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was arrested on July 16, 2010, by Lansford police.

He was also ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation.

All defendants must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole or probation.
