A Summit Hill man is facing multiple charges after failing to stop upon being directed to by borough police in an incident that happened at 1:20 a.m. April 2.

David L. Derby Jr., 27, of the 400 block of West Ludlow Street, is charged with fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, careless driving, reckless driving, stop sign violations and violations of general lighting requirements on a vehicle.

Police said he was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee that had an excessively loud muffler and no cover on the off-road light bar that was mounted on the roof of the vehicle as it proceeded eastbound on West White Street. Police said they activated the police cruiser emergency lights in an attempt to conduct a traffic stop at the intersection of White and Linden streets, but Derby accelerated and failed to stop, making a right turn onto Linden Street, traveling south and failing to stop for a posted stop sign. The vehicle then made a right turn onto West Iron Street, continuing at a high rate of speed and traveling across a parking lot onto West Ludlow Street.

Police said while attempting to negotiate the turn at a high rate of speed, the vehicle went sideways in the roadway and into the oncoming lane of travel. Police said Derby then fled onto a rocky dirt trail leading into a wooded area, at which time the incident was terminated.

Police said a witness who was outside at the time recognized Derby as the driver of the Jeep and positively identified him to authorities.

Police said they made contact with Derby the next day and he denied the incident and refused to cooperate and be interviewed about the incident.
